Overview
Corfad recently completed its final site visit to the historic Alligator Creek Bridge in Milman, Queensland, marking the successful culmination of a year-long refurbishment project in collaboration with Haslin and Queensland Rail.
Built over 110 years ago, the timber rail bridge required significant structural upgrades to ensure its continued safe operation and to extend its life by another century. Corfad was engaged by Haslin to assist in critical components of the refurbishment, providing skilled crews and expert support throughout the project lifecycle.
Scope of Work
Corfad’s role on the Alligator Creek Bridge included:
-
Supporting the removal and realignment of spans
-
Assisting in the installation of 9 new piers and headstocks
-
Upgrading structural elements with new transoms and fittings
-
Providing skilled rail labour and supervision throughout all phases
The bridge’s spans were carefully removed, rotated, and returned to their original positions—a complex task requiring precision and coordination across multiple teams. These efforts have significantly reinforced the integrity of the structure and future-proofed it for generations of use.
Project Challenges
Working on a century-old bridge in a remote area brought numerous challenges:
-
Navigating heritage considerations while upgrading to modern standards
-
Managing site access and logistics in a live rail environment
-
Adapting plans in real-time to suit site conditions and unexpected structural issues
Through close collaboration with Haslin and the QR team, Corfad contributed to the development of creative solutions, ensuring the project remained on schedule and within scope.
Outcome
The Alligator Creek Bridge now stands stronger than ever, with:
-
A robust substructure supported by new piers and headstocks
-
Modern fittings and transoms designed for long-term performance
-
Structural integrity restored to support another 100 years of rail service
This project exemplified teamwork, innovation, and craftsmanship in rail infrastructure.
